1982年毕业于华中农业大学

1982年至1987年在中国农业科学院原子能利用研究所任研究实习员；1987年至2005年供职于中国科学院武汉植物研究所，2001年至2005年任副所长、首席研究员和博士生导师；2006年至今任武汉大学药学院教授，2007年至2016年任副院长，2008年至2018年任中药与天然药物研究所所长。2001年至2017年，分别到新西兰皇家科学院（2001）、马来西亚国家医学研究所（2002）、法国国家健康与医学研究院（2003）、巴基斯坦卡拉奇大学H.E.J化学研究所（2005）、日本富山大学（2008）、英国剑桥大学（2009）、美国奥本大学（2009）、俄罗斯喀山大学（2010）和智利康塞普西翁大学（2017）作访问学者或合作交流。

主持完成了国家重大专项、国家科技支撑计划、国家公益性行业专项、国家863计划等共30多个科研项目
